Dominique Pelicot is accused of helping dozens of men rape his wife, Gisele Pelicot. This case has drawn a lot of attention, and it is almost over after nearly three months of hearings in Avignon, France.

Dominique Pelicot, 72, has admitted to secretly putting drugs in his wife’s food and drinks over several years. These drugs would knock Gisele unconscious, leaving her unable to stop him from raping her. He also invited other men to do the same.

The case has shocked the public, with many asking how such cruelty could happen. Prosecutor Laure Chabaud called for the maximum sentence of 20 years, saying it was necessary because of how serious and repeated the crimes were. Chabaud said that even though 20 years is a long time, it was not enough for such terrible acts.

During the trial, Pelicot sat silently, looking at the floor. He was leaning on a cane, and he did not say much. Chabaud explained how the actions of Pelicot were very harmful to his wife.

Gisele Pelicot, who is 71, was a strong presence during the trial. She insisted on a public hearing, even though the court first suggested keeping the case closed.

It’s rare for victims of sexual violence in France to allow their full name to be published. But Gisele chose to share her name, showing great courage and determination. People have praised her bravery for standing up and fighting for justice.

The trial also involves 51 other men who are accused of being involved in the abuse. Many of them have claimed they did not know they were hurting Gisele. Some said they were manipulated by Dominique Pelicot and did not mean to cause harm. Others shifted the blame entirely onto him.

The prosecutors have asked for a tough sentence for Pelicot, saying that the crime was severe. The court will decide on the verdict and sentence by December 20. Over the next two days, prosecutors will outline the sentences they want for the other defendants.

While Gisele’s courage has been recognized, the case has also raised questions about how often sexual violence is kept hidden in society. In this case, Gisele's decision to speak out has shone a light on a terrible issue.

As the trial draws to a close, many are waiting to see the final verdict. People are watching closely to see if justice will be served for Gisele Pelicot and all the others affected by the crime.
