More than 100 politicians from around the world are calling for the release of Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy campaigner jailed in Hong Kong. The 76-year-old, a British citizen, has been behind bars since 2020. His trial is set to resume under charges critics say are unfair and politically motivated.

A Global Appeal

Politicians from countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ukraine signed a letter urging Lai’s “immediate and unconditional release.” They argue that the charges against him are baseless and target his peaceful support for democracy and human rights.

The letter, led by UK Conservative MP Alicia Kearns, says Lai faces a trial with "unfair procedures." It also claims that evidence used against him was obtained through torture. The letter adds: "Jimmy Lai is being punished for promoting democracy and journalism."

Jimmy Lai, founder of the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper, faces charges under China's national security law.

He is accused of sedition and collusion with foreign forces based on articles published in his newspaper. If convicted, Lai could face life in prison.

His son, Sebastien Lai, voiced deep concern for his father’s health. In an interview with The Independent, Sebastien said, "My father will die in jail if this continues. This is about saving his life." Reports reveal that Lai appeared frail and shivering during recent court hearings, raising alarm about his condition.

Lai’s legal team revealed he has been denied proper medical care for his diabetes. They warned that poor treatment could lead to severe complications. According to his lawyers, the situation shows a disregard for Lai’s basic rights.

International Attention

The letter calling for Lai’s release comes after UK Labour leader Keir Starmer raised his case with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the recent G20 summit in Brazil. Starmer expressed worry about Lai’s worsening health and stressed the importance of human rights.

During the meeting, Starmer also discussed other pressing issues, including tensions over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and sanctions on UK parliament members. He urged China to respect the rule of law and human rights in Hong Kong.

Alicia Kearns, who organized the letter, said, "Jimmy Lai stands for freedom and democracy. His case shows the erosion of rights in Hong Kong." She added, "As a British citizen, he deserves our full support. We cannot allow this inhumane persecution to continue."

Other signatories of the letter include UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, US Congressman French Hill, and Ukraine’s Foreign Policy Chair Oleksandr Merezhko. They all agree that Lai's imprisonment is a violation of his basic rights and a warning sign for others fighting for democracy.

The open letter highlights the urgency of Lai’s case as his trial resumes. It reads, “On the eve of his trial’s recommencement, we demand Jimmy Lai’s release. He must be freed immediately and unconditionally.”

Many believe this trial is part of China’s effort to suppress democracy in Hong Kong. The use of hand-picked judges, delayed hearings, and questionable evidence points to a lack of fairness.

As Lai awaits his trial, the global community is watching. His case has become a symbol of the fight for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. Supporters hope the international pressure will lead to his release.
