Trump’s 2020 election could have averted the 'Ukrainian crisis,' says Putin

This comes after declassified documents revealed that Russia used aggressive tactics to influence the voting process. The NATO member, known for its close ties with Western allies, now faces questions about its electoral security.

In the first round of elections held on November 24, far-right pro-Russia candidate Calin Georgescu shocked the nation with a surprise victory. Georgescu had previously struggled in polls, showing single-digit support. However, his sudden rise has left many wondering about external influences.

Romania, located on NATO’s eastern edge, has long been a target for hybrid attacks. These attacks combine cyber tactics with disinformation campaigns. Georgescu’s win has sparked fears that Russia may be attempting to shift Romania’s foreign policy.

Declassified documents from Romania's top security council show how social media platforms, especially TikTok, helped Georgescu's campaign. Coordinated accounts and paid advertisements boosted his visibility. TikTok’s recommendation system amplified his messages, spreading them to millions.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement expressing its concerns. "The report of Russian involvement in cyber activities raises serious questions about the integrity of Romania’s elections," it said.

Washington also warned about the risks of Romania moving away from its Western allies. The U.S. highlighted that such a shift could damage security cooperation between the two nations. It could also discourage U.S. companies from investing in Romania.

"Romania has worked hard to strengthen its place in the trans-Atlantic community," the statement added. "Foreign actors must not undo this progress."

Calin Georgescu, 62, is a far-right leader who calls himself an outsider. He has made headlines for his controversial views. Georgescu says he will stop Romania’s aid to Ukraine, which has been fighting against Russia’s invasion. He also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him a true leader and patriot.

Georgescu’s ideas have divided Romania, a country that has been a strong supporter of NATO and the European Union. His rise to power has alarmed diplomats and analysts.

The final round of voting is set for Sunday. Georgescu faces pro-European centrist Elena Lasconi in a highly anticipated runoff. Analysts believe Georgescu has a strong chance of winning. If he does, it could mark a turning point in Romania’s foreign policy.

Lasconi, on the other hand, has vowed to keep Romania aligned with its Western allies. She believes Georgescu's victory would be a step backward for the country.

As the election runoff nears, the stakes are high. Romania's relationship with NATO and the European Union hangs in the balance. The election has also highlighted the growing role of social media in politics and the risks of foreign interference.
