Trump wins 2024 election: A new geopolitical shift with mixed reactions from global leaders
Even though leaders were friendly, there are still some tensions, especially with the Labour Party in the U.K. Trump’s team accused them of helping with his election campaign.
Donald Trump wins the 2024 election, and world leaders react in different ways. Some celebrate his return, while others worry about how his policies will affect global relations.
Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. presidential election, securing key states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. His victory gave him 270 electoral votes, enough to return to the White House for a second term. European leaders, though concerned about the future, were quick to offer their congratulations.
European Leaders Speak Up: A Mixed Reaction
French President Emmanuel Macron was one of the first to congratulate Trump. He shared his message on social media, writing, “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump.
Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”
In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Trump. He expressed his excitement about working together in the years ahead.
He mentioned the strong partnership between the U.K. and the U.S., saying, “As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise.”
Even though leaders were friendly, there are still some tensions, especially with the Labour Party in the U.K. Trump’s team accused them of helping with his election campaign.
The U.K. government’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy has been very critical of Trump. He once called Trump a “neo-Nazi sympathizing sociopath.” Lammy had also expressed his opposition to Trump’s visit to the U.K. during his first term.
Concerns Grow: Trump’s Impact on Europe and Russia
Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, also congratulated Trump. She reminded him that the U.S. and the European Union are more than just allies. “We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens,” she said.
However, Trump’s return to office raises many concerns in Europe. Some fear that Trump might stop supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia. Trump has also criticized NATO and threatened to pull the U.S. out of the security group. Furthermore, he has promised to impose high tariffs on European goods, which could hurt trade between the two regions.
One leader, though, did not join the others in congratulating Trump: Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Relations between the U.S. and Russia are at an all-time low, mostly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would wait for Trump’s actions before reacting. Peskov acknowledged Trump’s campaign statements but said that the president-elect might take a different approach once he takes office.
Right-Wing Leaders Celebrate Trump’s Victory
On the other hand, right-wing leaders in Europe were eager to congratulate Trump. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a strong supporter of Trump, was quick to celebrate his win. Orbán called it “the biggest comeback in U.S. political history.” He praised Trump’s victory as “much-needed for the world.”
Similarly, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Trump on behalf of Italy. She emphasized the strong friendship and alliance between Italy and the U.S. Meloni said she was looking forward to strengthening the relationship even more during Trump’s second term.
While European leaders are eager to work with Trump, many are uncertain about what his return to office will mean for the future of international relations, particularly with Europe and Russia.
Iran Responds to U.S. Election Results: "It Doesn’t Matter"
Iran has reacted to the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, saying it does not matter who wins. Fatemeh Mohajerani, the Iranian government spokesperson, told reporters that the overall policies of the U.S. and Iran will stay the same, no matter who is president.
Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, claimed victory in the November 5 election, defeating Democrat Kamala Harris.
Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2021, has been known for his tough stance toward Iran. In 2018, Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal, which was a significant move that hurt relations between the two countries.
Tensions reached a peak in 2020 when Trump ordered the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s top military commander. This event nearly led to direct military conflict between Iran and the U.S.
Now, with Trump returning to the White House, many are worried that relations between Tehran and Washington could become even more strained. This could complicate efforts to bring back the 2015 nuclear deal and increase tensions in the Middle East, especially with the ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
However, Mohajerani tried to downplay these concerns. She stressed that Iran has already made the necessary plans, and the result of the U.S. election won’t change anything for the people of Iran. She said, "It doesn’t really matter who becomes president."

Arab leaders sent their congratulations to Donald Trump after he won the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Trump, the Republican candidate, defeated Democrat Kamala Harris to become the 47th president of the United States.
Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani congratulated Trump and expressed his eagerness to strengthen their partnership.
He also mentioned working together on security and stability in the region and globally.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi shared his congratulations and emphasized his hopes to achieve peace and stability in the region. He also said he looked forward to working with Trump to benefit both Egypt and the U.S.
Jordanian King Abdullah II also congratulated Trump, looking forward to continuing Jordan’s strong partnership with the U.S. He expressed hopes for more regional and global peace.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose country is struggling with a deadly Israeli military campaign, also sent his congratulations to Trump.
The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, also congratulated Trump and expressed his hopes to keep working with the U.S. for a stable and prosperous future.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas joined in the congratulations, expressing confidence that Trump’s leadership would support the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also praised Trump’s victory and highlighted Iraq’s desire to strengthen relations with the U.S.
Trump’s victory marks a historic moment, as he will become the second U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland.
