Two Muslim women from the Democratic Party, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, have been re-elected to the United States House of Representatives. Rashida Tlaib won her fourth term, and Ilhan Omar celebrated her third term.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian origin, won her seat in Michigan. She received strong support from Dearborn's large Arab-American community, which helped her defeat her Republican opponent, James Hooper.
Tlaib has been vocal on many issues, especially her criticism of U.S. support for Israel's actions in Gaza. She also stood out when she chose not to endorse Kamala Harris in the recent presidential race due to Harris’s views on Palestine-Israel issues.
Ilhan Omar, a Somali American, won her third term as a representative for Minnesota. Her district covers Minneapolis and several nearby suburbs. Like Tlaib, Omar has also been outspoken on issues related to Gaza.
Following her victory, Omar expressed gratitude to her supporters. She shared on social media that her team knocked on over 117,000 doors, made over 108,000 phone calls, and sent over 147,000 messages. "Our hard work has paid off," she said. "This victory belongs to everyone who believes in a better future."
Both Tlaib and Omar are part of a group of progressive lawmakers called “The Squad.” This group includes other well-known members of Congress like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Squad is recognized for pushing progressive policies and bringing attention to issues affecting minorities and underrepresented groups in America.
