Ukrainian President Zelensky is concerned that a Trump win could stop US aid. Slovak PM Fico discusses the impact of Trump’s policies on Ukraine and global politics.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is worried that if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, it could stop crucial military and financial aid from Washington. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shared these concerns during an interview on Radio Slovensko.

Fico explained that when he met Zelensky at an EU summit in Budapest, Hungary, on November 7, the Ukrainian leader seemed visibly shaken. Fico said that Zelensky looked afraid of what could happen if Trump takes office again.

The Slovak prime minister said, "Have you ever seen someone afraid the war might end? I saw him, and his name is Volodymyr Zelensky."

Zelensky was worried that Trump's victory might lead to a stop in the support Ukraine has been receiving from the United States. During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine quickly. He claimed he could do it in just "24 hours" but didn’t explain how.

Fico pointed out that as long as the West continues to send billions of dollars in weapons to Ukraine, the fighting will likely continue.

He argued that Trump’s stance on foreign policy is different. As a businessman, Trump prefers using tariffs and sanctions instead of military action. According to Fico, Trump is someone who dislikes wars and will likely take strong steps to address the situation.

Trump’s win would mean big changes in how the war is handled. If the US stops supporting Ukraine, the European Union (EU) may need to change its approach. Fico raised the question of whether the EU can handle the cost of the war on its own if Washington pulls back. “Are we ready to take on all the costs of this war?” he asked.

Fico also criticized the EU’s belief that continuing to support Ukraine will eventually force Russia to give up. He called this logic flawed, saying it was unrealistic. He reminded everyone that the EU is a peace project, and its main goal should be to stop the war.

Leaders from the European Union met in Budapest to discuss what might happen if the US pulls its support from Ukraine. While they are worried about the financial costs, their biggest concern is the lack of military resources. Most of the weapons sent to Ukraine have come from the United States, and if this flow stops, it could be a huge problem for Ukraine.

Zelensky, however, is more concerned about money. He asked the EU to provide about $300 billion in frozen Russian assets if the US stops its aid.

He argued that this money rightfully belongs to Ukraine and should be used to help the country in its fight. Zelensky also said he doesn’t know yet what Trump plans to do, but he insisted that Ukraine should decide its own future. Only Ukraine, according to him, should have the authority to decide how the war should end.
