Just days after a near-assassination attempt, Donald Trump will be the guest of honor at the Republican National Convention (RNC). The week-long event will culminate in his official nomination as the Republican candidate for president.
The RNC begins Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Trump expected to accept the nomination on Thursday. The Vice Presidential nominee will also be announced during the event.
Security is extremely tight, with entire blocks of Milwaukee’s CBD shut off to protect Trump, high-profile Republicans, and thousands of spectators and delegates. Following the death of rally-goer Corey Comperatore and the attempted assassination of Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, security measures have intensified even further.
Despite the increased security, one controversial item will not be banned in Milwaukee during the RNC: guns. Some, like City Councillor Robert Bauman, find this policy absurd.
“Allowing guns while banning tennis balls is almost ludicrous,” said Bauman. Council President Jose G. Perez agreed, saying, “Everyone feels uncomfortable with guns at the RNC, but we can't break state law.”
The laissez-faire attitude toward guns does not extend to the venues or the “hard security zone” directly in front of them, where firearms are banned. However, many events and venues attended by convention-goers fall within the gun zone. Curiously, other items like string, ceramic vessels, containers of bodily fluids, canned goods, and tennis balls are restricted.
Meanwhile, clear RNC-branded plastic handbags have become a must-have fashion accessory. Enclosed bags are considered a security threat, making clear bags essential for attendees.
Authorities will also enforce strict rules on actions, arresting those obstructing streets or entryways, “camping,” or abandoning items. It is also illegal to attach oneself to another person, building, or fixture to obstruct public movement, a rule aimed at potential protesters.
The RNC promises to be a high-stakes event, with security and safety at the forefront of concerns.
