In light of allegations of sexual assault at a church she formerly served as pastor in the 1990s, the leader of the Protestant Church in Germany has announced her resignation. Annette Kurschus, a respected theologian holding a high-ranking position within Germany's largest Protestant federation, said on Monday that although she had no prior knowledge of the reported abuse, she is stepping down to protect the reputation of the church.
During a press conference announcing her resignation, Kurschus stated, "At every moment, I acted to the best of my knowledge and my conscience," However, she acknowledged that her reputation has been affected, leading to a loss of public trust.
Media reports have continuously questioned Kurschus regarding her alleged awareness of detailed sexual abuse allegations against a fellow church colleague during the 1990s. Despite this, she took no action at the time. The accused colleague, who was a vicar in the same church district where Kurschus worked, is now under police investigation.
Kurschus admitted that she was aware of the man's homosexuality and extramarital affairs during that period. However, she claims to have only recently learned about the allegations of sexual abuse.
I have never – and I stress this – never sought to shirk my responsibility, withhold important facts, cover up facts or even cover up for an accused person," Kurschus asserted.
