The Met Office says temperatures in southern England could climb to 34°C, making it the hottest day of 2024 so far. London, East Anglia, and nearby counties will be the warmest, with highs around 33°C in London. Manchester will hit 26°C, and Edinburgh will stay cooler at 21°C.

The heat is coming from warm air moving in from Europe. On Sunday, temperatures went up across much of the UK. Monday could see highs of 34°C to 35°C. “It’s going to be hot,” says Met Office forecaster Craig Snell. The heat will bring high humidity, making it feel uncomfortable, especially in central and eastern England.

But it’s not all sunshine. Thunderstorms are on the way for northern England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The Met Office has issued warnings for these areas. Expect heavy rain, frequent lightning, and strong winds. Some roads might be slippery and closed during the early morning rush hour.

A heat health alert is in place for several regions, including London and the East Midlands. This alert suggests that the hot weather might affect health and social care services. To stay safe, keep your curtains closed during the hottest part of the day and drink plenty of water.

Thunderstorms have already started in the Republic of Ireland and will move to Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England overnight. Conditions might get quite rough in these areas.

Temperatures will cool down by Tuesday and Wednesday. This hot spell isn’t considered a heatwave since it doesn’t meet the three-day criteria. The highest UK temperature of 40.3°C, recorded in 2022, still stands.
