On Wednesday, September 11, President Joe Biden called for Israel to take full responsibility for the death of Aysenur Eygi, a US-Turkish activist.

Eygi, who was 26, was killed by Israeli forces while she was attending a protest against Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Eygi had been participating in the weekly demonstrations against these settlements, which are considered illegal under international law. These protests are supported by some members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Eygi was killed as the Israeli military responded to what they described as a “violent riot.”

The Israeli military has admitted that Eygi was likely hit “unintentionally” by their forces. They have acknowledged responsibility for her death, describing it as a tragic error caused by an escalation of violence. According to the military, Eygi was caught in the crossfire while they were dealing with the protest.

Eygi’s family, however, rejects this explanation. They have criticized the military’s preliminary investigation, calling it “wholly inadequate.” The family claims that Eygi was seeking shelter in an olive grove when she was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier’s bullet.

In his statement, President Biden expressed his deep sadness and outrage over the incident. He said, "I am outraged and deeply saddened by the death of Aysenur Eygi. The shooting that led to her death is totally unacceptable." Biden called on Israel to ensure that such incidents do not happen again and to take full accountability.

Biden also mentioned that violence from both Israeli settlers and Palestinian extremists has been ongoing for too long. He stated, “I will continue to support policies that hold all extremists – Israelis and Palestinians alike – accountable for stoking violence and serving as obstacles to peace.”

The US President's remarks come after top US officials had urged Israel to make changes to its operations in the West Bank. The international community is watching closely to see how Israel will address this tragic incident and whether it will implement measures to prevent similar events in the future.
