Brazilian officials investigating company behind Taylor Swift shows in Rio de Janeiro after fan's death

     Nov 23, 2023

Police in Rio de Janeiro have launched an investigation into Time4Fun, the company responsible for organizing Taylor Swift's concerts in the city. This follows the death of a fan and reports from others about unbearable conditions experienced during the Eras Tour, which occurred during a severe heatwave.

The Civil Police Department of Rio de Janeiro's consumer delegations department is conducting an inquiry into the organizers with regards to potentially endangering the lives and health of concert attendees. Testimonies from event organizers will be obtained, and further actions are being taken to uncover the truth of the matter.

Time4Fun did not initially respond to requests for comment, however, CEO Serafim Abreu expressed his apologies in a video shared on social media on Thursday. Abreu acknowledged that the company is aware of its significant responsibility in organizing an event of this magnitude. To ensure the comfort and safety of attendees, Time4Fun spared no effort or resources in adhering to the best global practices in the industry.

Abreu recognized that additional measures could have been taken to enhance the experience for fans, such as providing more shaded areas to combat the extreme heat. The company also confirmed the unfortunate passing of Ana Clara Benevides Machado during the concert held in the midst of a record-breaking heat wave.

The stadium's temperature reached a heat index of 138 degrees Fahrenheit, causing Taylor Swift to postpone her performance scheduled for Saturday night due to the extreme conditions.

There were numerous complaints from fans about the unbearable heat and inadequate access to water at the stadium. There were even reports of some fans fainting due to the extreme temperatures.

It's important to note that the ongoing investigation is unrelated to Machado's death. The Municipal Health Department of Rio confirmed that she passed out during Swift's performance and suffered from a cardiac arrest. However, the exact cause of her death remains unknown.

Swift expressed her deep sorrow and grief over Machado's tragic passing through an Instagram story.

To address the concerns raised by fans, T4F announced on social media that water bottles and sealed food items would be permitted for the next two shows. This policy will also apply to the three upcoming performances in São Paulo.
