Despite Connor McDavid putting together one of the best statistical performances in NHL playoff history, the Edmonton Oilers fell short in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers after a challenging seven-game series. Though it was a great loss for the team, McDavid was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy for his outstanding contributions as the playoffs' most valuable player.
Even though it was a rewarding moment, McDavid couldn't receive the award after the Oilers lost 2-1 to the Panthers.
"We faced challenges for months, and it's tough," McDavid said about the loss. "(I'll remember) how we bounced back as a team. We went through a lot together. Highs and lows. And we came so close."
Throwing back to his record, McDavid scored eight goals and made 34 assists in about 25 playoff games. This is the 42 points that raked him fourth for most points in a playoff year. He joins Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux as the only players to score more than 40 points in a single playoff.
Beyond all that, McDavid broke records this playoff season. He set a new record for most assists in a playoff season with 34, beating Gretzky's 31.
When the Oilers were down 3-0 to the Panthers, McDavid played a crucial role. He got four points in Games 4 and 5, the first player ever to do this in back-to-back Stanley Cup Final games.
Even his excellence wasn't limited to the finals. Against the Vancouver Canucks, he had three assists in Games 6 and 7, totaling a record 11 points when facing elimination in a playoff.
Drafted No. 1 by the Oilers in 2015, McDavid has a long list of achievements. Starting from the Hart Memorial Trophy three times, the Art Ross Trophy five times, first-team All-Star five times, and many more like this!!!!
Now, Connor McDavid has won the Conn Smythe Trophy- another addition to the extensive list of his career achievements. Even this is the first Stanley Cup for the Panthers defeating the Oilers. This continues the wait for Canadian teams, who haven't won since 1993.
