Obama has been in regular touch with Harris and has informally endorsed her candidacy, according to the story, which cited people familiar with the conversations.

"He stays in constant touch with her and thinks she's been off to a great start," stated one of them.

Obama is among the few well-known Democrats in the nation who has not yet endorsed Harris. He has not yet made his support known, in contrast to other party leaders who have come forward to openly support her.

"Aides to Obama and Harris have also discussed arranging for the two of them to appear together on the campaign trail, though no date has been set," according to the report.

On Monday, delegates of the party endorsed Harris, who had received no challengers for the nomination the day before President Joe Biden declared he was not running for reelection.

Obama and Harris have been friends for a long time. She spoke at his 2012 nominating convention after having backed his 2008 campaign from the beginning. Obama backed Harris during her 2016 Senate campaign and helped her during her campaign for California's attorney general.
