Prior to performing his 2002 hit "Cry Me a River," which was reportedly inspired by Spears allegedly cheating on him, the *NSYNC member took a moment to address the audience.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely no one," Timberlake said.

Following this statement, many people took to social media to criticize the 43-year-old singer for his apparent shade towards the 42-year-old pop star, especially considering that she had publicly praised his new single, "Selfish," just two days prior.

In what appears to be a response to Timberlake, Spears posted a cryptic photo of a basketball hoop on her now-private Instagram account.

Timberlake faced criticism in October when Spears revealed in her memoir, The Woman in Me, that she had an abortion while they were dating because he "wasn't happy" about the pregnancy and "didn't want to be a father."

The Princess of Pop expressed her remorse on Monday for any offense caused by her revealing book. In a now-deleted Instagram post, she sincerely apologized, saying, "I am deeply sorry."

Furthermore, She confessed, "I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake's new song Selfish. It is incredibly good. And whenever I see Justin and Jimmy Fallon together, I burst into laughter."

Last Thursday, her track entered the Top 40 of the US iTunes chart, and by Friday, it had claimed the No. 1 spot, while Timberlake's song dropped to No. 3.

The music icons began dating in 1999 but ended their relationship in 2002. During their breakup, Timberlake indicated that Spears had been unfaithful, a claim she neither confirmed nor denied.

The treatment of Spears by Timberlake was previously examined in the 2021 documentary Framing Britney Spears by the New York Times, leading the SexyBack performer to publicly apologize to his former partner.

Subsequently, he also showed his support for Spears when she spoke out in court about her "abusive" 13-year conservatorship, which was officially ended in November of that year.

In 2012, Timberlake tied the knot with Jessica Biel, and together they have two sons: Silas, who is 8 years old, and Phineas, who is 3.

Meanwhile, Spears is currently in the process of divorcing Sam Asghari. She has two sons, Sean Preston, who is 18, and Jayden James, who is 17, from her previous marriage to Kevin Federline.
