Economist Larry Summers, who previously served in the Obama and Clinton administrations, is joining the new board of OpenAI, a company that recently reinstated CEO Sam Altman after he was removed by the previous board. The addition of Summers, along with former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor as chair and Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, indicates a significant change in the board's composition.
Summers and Taylor, who both serve on other corporate boards, bring a wealth of experience compared to the previous board that fired Altman. This decision resulted in an employee revolt and had widespread consequence in the tech and business communities. OpenAI later announced that they have reached an agreement for Altman's return.
Bret Taylor will serve as the chair of the "initial" board, taking over from Greg Brockman, who resigned in support of Altman. The primary responsibility of the new board members will be to consider potential candidates for a larger board consisting of up to nine individuals. Both Altman and Microsoft are interested in securing seats on this board.
