Damsel" is an American dark fantasy film released in 2024, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau.
Netflix's "Damsel" portrays a twisted fairy tale of toxic romance and a marriage gone wrong. It subverts traditional chivalric narratives, where a heroic knight saves a damsel in distress.
The film has gained 35.3 million views since its release on March 8.
"Damsel" ending plot-
In the film's conclusion, Elodie, her stepmother, and Floria are reunited and alive. Elodie expresses her plans to rule the kingdom alongside her stepmother. They set sail on a ship back home, with a dragon flying alongside them into the sunset. "Damsel" is now available to stream on Netflix.
About "Damsel" -
Elodie, once seen as a dutiful damsel, agrees to marry a charming prince only to realize she has fallen into a trap set by the royal family. They have recruited her as a sacrifice to settle an ancient debt, throwing her into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon.
Alone and relying on her wits and willpower, Elodie must fight for survival. Actress Brown, who portrays Elodie, felt the intensity of the emotional journey while filming in the realistic cave system. Despite the challenges of running, falling, and screaming in the caves, Brown embraced the role as an actor but detested them as Elodie.
The teaser trailer for the film, set to the haunting melody of "Run from Me" by Timber Timbre, features Elodie's enchanting introduction to the royal family and the harsh reality of her captivity as she struggles for survival in a dark cave. As Wright narrates, "For generations, it has been our duty to safeguard our people," hinting at the sacrifices women before Elodie have made for the kingdom.
The scene cuts to Elodie running her fingers over the names of past captives etched into the cave walls, revealing the true nature of her situation.
Elodie is following the path of her predecessors in a somber manner, while Brown is focused on the future. She expressed, "I couldn't draw inspiration from existing stories for Damsel. With Eleven, I draw from Mad Max. And with Enola Holmes, I draw a bit from Hermione in Harry Potter.
Since I couldn't find a reference for Elodie, I had to create her character, discover her strengths and weaknesses, and craft a compelling journey for her so that viewers would care about her, believe in her, and cheer for her."
Elodie will require all the encouragement she can get to survive Damsel. Fresnadillo describes it as "an exciting adventure with a dark twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat."
He adds, "As a filmmaker, I always aim to surprise the audience with a fresh perspective on a story. Particularly with traditional tales, we must update them with new, modern, and realistic approaches to resonate with viewers."
