Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Kazan, Russia, on October 22, 2024. He is there for a two-day visit to attend the 16th BRICS summit. BRICS is a group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This summit is special because it is the first one since the group got new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The summit is hosted by Russia this year. It is happening during a tough time for the world, especially with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Many people see this summit as a chance for non-Western countries to come together and show their strength.

A big topic for discussion will be a new payment system that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to create. This system would help countries make payments without using SWIFT, a global payment service that many Russian banks cannot access anymore.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with other leaders, including President Putin and President Xi Jinping of China. They will talk about important issues that affect their countries and the world. PM Modi wants to focus on working together to make things better, like helping each other in trade and culture.

Before heading to Kazan, PM Modi said that India values working closely with other BRICS countries. He believes the group is a good place to discuss important problems. He said, “The expansion of BRICS has made the group even more inclusive, helping us work together for a better world.”

This visit is also a way to strengthen the friendship between India and Russia. PM Modi called this relationship a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership."

At the summit, leaders will also talk about how to improve cooperation in different areas. They want to work together to solve global problems and find solutions that help everyone.

This year’s summit is important because it is the first time the group is meeting with its new members. Having Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE in BRICS makes it more diverse, which helps the group look at issues in new ways.

PM Modi’s trip to Russia is a big step for India in global talks. The meetings he will have with other leaders are expected to strengthen ties between India and the other BRICS countries.

The BRICS summit will continue for two more days with many more discussions and meetings planned.
