India's PM Modi to Discuss Key Issues with President Xi in BRICS Summit 2024

On October 23, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting is highly anticipated as it takes place during the 16th BRICS summit. The summit is an important gathering of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

This meeting comes right after a significant achievement between India and China. Their militaries have agreed on new rules for patrolling the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. This agreement is a big step towards improving relations between the two nations.

On the first day of the summit, PM Modi had meetings with other leaders. He spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During his talk with President Putin, Modi expressed India's support for ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He promised to provide “all possible assistance” to help resolve this crisis.

President Putin shared that BRICS plans to announce key decisions aimed at improving the organization’s activities, further enhancing its role in global cooperation.

Their discussions included the importance of close contact between the Foreign Ministers of both nations. They are committed to holding the next Inter-Governmental Commission meeting in New Delhi in November, which will help strengthen their bilateral ties even further.

Later, PM Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for the first time since he took office. Their discussions were vital, focusing on reducing tensions in West Asia. Iran has sought India’s assistance in resolving conflicts in the region, as India is familiar with many leaders worldwide.

In their talks, PM Modi and President Pezeshkian discussed several important topics, including the Chabahar port, which is critical for enhancing trade and connectivity. They also talked about the International North-South Corridor, which aims to improve transportation links between India, Iran, and Russia.

The situation in Afghanistan was another key issue. Both leaders highlighted the need for humanitarian aid for the Afghan people. As Afghanistan faces significant challenges, providing assistance is crucial.
