Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who stepped down from the throne earlier this year, has been taken to the hospital after a fall at her home. According to Danish media, the 84-year-old queen is doing fine but is being kept under observation for now.
The queen was admitted to the University Hospital in Copenhagen late Wednesday evening. This followed a fall at Fredensborg Castle, her residence located north of the Danish capital. The royal household shared this information with local media, adding that her condition is stable.
Lene Balleby, the head of communications for the royal family, said, "According to the circumstances, the queen is doing well, but was admitted for observation for the time being." Balleby did not provide further details.
Due to the incident, Queen Margrethe had to cancel her appearance at an event scheduled for Friday. The event was meant to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University.
This event held special meaning for the queen, as she had studied prehistoric archaeology at Copenhagen University. In the past, Queen Margrethe even mentioned that she would have become an archaeologist if she were not the monarch of Denmark.
Earlier this year, in January, Queen Margrethe made history by becoming the first Danish monarch to abdicate the throne in nearly 900 years. After reigning for 52 years, she passed on the crown to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. Her decision came as a surprise to many because she had always said that she would never step down.
However, health problems, including the need for back surgery, led to her decision. In her New Year’s speech, she said, “Time takes its toll,” while announcing her plans to abdicate. The speech stunned the nation and marked the end of an era for Denmark.
Queen Margrethe's long reign has been highly respected, and her abdication marked a significant moment in the country’s history. Now, with Crown Prince Frederik as king, Denmark is entering a new chapter in its monarchy.
For now, the focus remains on the queen’s health and recovery. While the royal family has not shared any more details, they have reassured the public that Queen Margrethe is doing well after her fall and is in good hands at the hospital.
As Denmark waits for more updates, it is clear that the nation holds deep affection for its former queen, hoping for her speedy recovery and continued well-being.
