Record $7.9M Prize Money Set for Women's T20 World Cup

Women's T20 World Cup sets new prize record of $7.96M. Winners will earn $2.34M, double last time, as part of ICC's effort to grow women’s cricket.

Next month’s Women's T20 World Cup will have a record prize pool of $7.96 million, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC). This is part of ICC’s goal to make women’s cricket bigger and give fair rewards.

The winning team will take home $2.34 million. This is more than twice what Australia earned in 2023, when they won $1 million. 

To compare, India won $2.45 million after winning the Men’s T20 World Cup this year, which had a bigger total prize of $11.25 million.

The ICC says that the new prize amounts show their plan to support the growth of women’s cricket by 2032. Now, both men’s and women’s teams will get the same prize for similar achievements in world tournaments. 

“Teams will get the same prize for the same finishing position in both men's and women’s events. They will also get equal prize money for winning matches,” said the ICC in a statement.

The Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 will have more prize money, but that’s because it will have more teams and games compared to the women’s event.

Even the team that loses in the final will still win $1.17 million. Every one of the 10 teams in the Women's T20 World Cup is guaranteed at least $112,500, even if they don’t win the tournament.

The Women's T20 World Cup will take place from October 3 to 20. It was supposed to happen in Bangladesh, but due to recent political troubles, the tournament has been moved to the United Arab Emirates.

This increase in prize money shows how serious the ICC is about making women’s cricket bigger and more popular worldwide. Players and fans can expect a thrilling tournament, with bigger rewards and more excitement on the way.
