Taylor Swift, with 283 million Instagram followers, made a big splash online this week. Right after Tuesday night’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Swift posted a strong endorsement for Harris. Her post quickly gained attention, receiving over 2.3 million likes in just 30 mihe shared a link to a voter registration website, urging her fans to get involved. Swift wrote, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
Swift, known for her large following of young women, is influential in the upcoming November election. Her recent tour has earned over €905 million ($1 billion) in ticket sales.
To her Instagram post, she attached a picture of herself with her cat, Benjamin Button, and signed off as “Childless Cat Lady.” This was a nod to comments made by JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, who suggested that women without children had less stake in the country's future.
A senior campaign official from Harris’s team mentioned that the endorsement was not planned with the campaign. Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, seemed to find out about the endorsement during a live TV interview. He praised Swift’s message, saying, “That was eloquent. And it was clear. And that’s the kind of courage we need in America to stand up.”
Swift explained that her endorsement was partly due to Trump’s use of fake AI-generated pictures suggesting she supported him.
One image showed Swift dressed as Uncle Sam with text saying, “Taylor wants YOU to VOTE for DONALD TRUMP.” Swift felt it was important to be clear about her actual voting plans. She said, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice.”
The Trump campaign responded by dismissing Swift’s endorsement. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said, “This is further evidence that the Democrat Party has unfortunately become a party of the wealthy elites.” She added, “There’s many Swifties for Trump out there in America,” including herself.
Swift’s endorsement of Harris was not entirely unexpected. In 2020, she supported President Joe Biden and cheered for Harris during her debate against Mike Pence. Swift has also been openly critical of Trump, accusing him of fueling “the fires of white supremacy and racism.”
Taylor Swift’s recent endorsement of Kamala Harris has caused quite a stir online. Her strong support for Harris highlights her commitment to the causes she believes in, and her clear stand against fake news.
