Mumbai faced heavy rainfall on Monday, disrupting suburban train services and causing severe waterlogging. The BMC declared a holiday for all schools and colleges for the first and second sessions.

Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rainfall in six hours from 1 am to 7 am. The heavy rains led to waterlogging and train disruptions. More heavy rain is expected today. To avoid inconvenience, a holiday was declared for the first session of schools and colleges. The decision for the next session will be reviewed later.

Major highlights:

1. NDRF Deployment: Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in several areas, including Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ghatkopar, Kurla, and Sindhudurg. These teams are on standby to handle any emergencies due to the heavy rains.

2. Weather Forecast: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rain in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra for the next three days, until July 10. Authorities advised residents to just stay indoors and take necessary precautions.

3. Rainfall Measurement: The Santacruz weather station recorded 27 centimeters of precipitation in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. Monday. This indicates the intensity of the rainfall that has caused widespread disruption.

4. Airport Impact: Flight services at Mumbai airport were severely affected. Runway operations were shut down for over an hour, and 50 flights were canceled due to low visibility from the heavy rains. Passengers should check with airlines for schedule updates.

5. Exams Cancelled: Mumbai University postponed all exams of the Centre of Distance and Open Learning scheduled for Monday's first half due to the heavy rains. Schools were also shut for the morning session.

6. Assembly Sessions Adjourned: The Maharashtra assembly and council were adjourned for the day on Monday. Many legislators and officials couldn't reach the legislature complex. Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar highlighted the issues faced by Mumbai residents. Assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar noted that legislature staffers needed to return home, and many MLAs and ministers couldn't attend.
