China reports record $1.2 trillion trade surplus for 2025, defying Trump's tariffs.

On Tuesday night, the vice-presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance took place in New York City. This event was important as both candidates shared their views on the future of the United States. Walz is the Democratic governor of Minnesota, while Vance is a Republican senator from Ohio. They come from the Midwest but have very different styles and messages.

Preparation for the Debate

The debate lasted 90 minutes and was moderated by CBS News. Both candidates aimed to support their running mates: Kamala Harris for Walz and Donald Trump for Vance. This debate is part of a heated election year.

To prepare for the debate, Walz practiced in Minneapolis with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who acted as Vance. Buttigieg has experience; he pretended to be Mike Pence when Harris prepared for the 2020 debate. Vance, on the other hand, held mock debates with Tom Emmer, the Republican whip in the House, who pretended to be Walz. Emmer is also from Minnesota, which helped him understand Walz's style better.

Candidates’ Strengths

Both candidates bring different strengths to the debate. Vance has experience and enjoys debating under the spotlight. Walz, with a background as a public school teacher, knows how to think quickly and handle tough situations.

Robby Mook, who managed Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016, expected a heated debate. A big question was whether Vance could improve his image after a rocky start to his campaign. He faced criticism for his controversial remarks and has struggled to attract new voters to Trump’s campaign.

Vance's comments have sometimes been seen as strange or offensive. For instance, he once suggested that Haitian immigrants were harming pets, which local officials denied. He even admitted to CNN that he would create stories to attract media attention. This has hurt his popularity, with his unfavorable rating being higher than his favorable rating.

Walz's Positive Outlook

In contrast, Walz enjoys a more positive reputation, with a four-point lead in favorability ratings. His challenge in the debate was to counter Vance's attempts to label him as a misinformation candidate. Walz needed to stick to his message and avoid getting distracted.

John Conway, who leads a group of Republican voters against Trump, advised Walz to take a dual approach. He should attack Trump’s lies and share a positive vision for the future. This strategy worked well for Harris during her debate with Trump.

The Stakes of the Debate

Vice-presidential debates have not always made a big impact on elections. However, this election is different. With Joe Biden stepping down and Harris stepping up, the stakes are higher. This debate is likely the last major event before the election on November 5.

Both candidates discussed key issues like the economy, immigration, and foreign wars. However, a larger theme was who could best represent the Midwest. Walz’s vision is friendly and community-oriented. He believes in neighbors helping each other and the importance of local heroes like football coaches.

In contrast, Vance paints a darker picture, highlighting drug addiction and broken families. His view reflects a more troubled Midwest, similar to Trump's narrative.

As the debate progressed, both candidates showcased their unique visions for the future of the Midwest and the nation. The stage was set for a clash of ideas and values, showcasing two determined individuals ready to represent their parties.

With their contrasting perspectives, Walz and Vance entered the debate ready to share their plans and engage in lively discussions that could shape the future of the United States.
