Bhutan held its fourth parliamentary election on Wednesday after transitioning from monarchy to democracy in 2008. The top leader of the country's political party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay is going to be the new Prime Minister after winning the recently concluded elections.

According to Bhutan's Election Commission, Bhutan Broadcasting Service, the country's state-owned television channel, said the PDP won 30 of the 47 seats in the National Assembly. Bhutan Tendrel Party won the remaining 17 seats.

On the other hand, outgoing Prime Minister Lotte Tshering and her political party DNT did not get a single seat.

58-year-old Tshering Tobgay is a politician, environmental movement leader and lawyer. Before that, he was the Prime Minister of Bhutan from 2013 to 2018.

It should be noted that the election of Bhutan, a country in the Himalayan mountain region, was held in two stages. The two parties with the highest number of votes in the first phase participate in the second phase.

If only two parties are contesting the election, there is only one vote.

A total of 47 legislators were elected in the second phase of the election. The elected form the government.

The number of voters in Bhutan is about 500,000 out of 800,000 people. However, voting is not mandatory for Bhutanese citizens.

Bhutan, a predominantly Buddhist country, has strict rules for organizing elections. By law, only public notice boards can display promotional materials.

Publication of any kind of poster, banner or leaflet is totally illegal in Bhutan.
