According to a report by CNN says that Joe Biden was given three retaliation options after a drone strike in Jordan resulted in the death of three US service members. The next day, the US president held a meeting in the Situation Room with his top national security adviser.

During this meeting, Biden approved the first set of strikes in Iraq and Syria, which were carried out the previous night. In the same meeting, he was informed that militant groups supported by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were responsible for the drone attack. Following the meeting, the president's national security team collaborated with the Department of Defense to closely monitor the situation in the region and finalize their plans.

Last night, the US conducted extensive strikes on 85 targets in Iraq and Syria, resulting in the reported deaths of nearly 40 people. Iraq accounted for 16 casualties, while Syria recorded 23.

According to a senior administration official who spoke to NBC News, American officials notified Iraq in advance about the airstrikes that took place last night. This statement oppose the earlier claim by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani, who called the White House's assertion of prior warning to Iraq as "lies". However, another administration official stated that the Iraqi government was indeed given a short-notice warning about the US strikes.
