Diplomats Discuss Easing Weapon Rules and Iranian Missiles
This visit is happening at a key time. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is asking for stronger weapons with fewer rules. He needs these weapons to help fight against Russia. There are worries because Russia might be getting missiles from Iran. This makes the situation even more serious.
US President Joe Biden was asked if Ukraine could use longer-range weapons to hit Russian targets. He said, "We're working that out right now." This means the US is thinking about whether to allow Ukraine to use these more powerful weapons.
In Moscow, Russia said it would respond if the US eases its rules. They didn’t give details but said that allowing Ukraine to strike Russian targets would show why Russia started the war. They believe the West’s support for Ukraine is one reason for the conflict.
Even with these challenges, Ukraine received some good news. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed to give Ukraine $1.1 billion. This money will help Ukraine as it deals with attacks on its infrastructure and prepares for the winter.
But there are concerns about Iranian missiles. The US thinks Russia might soon use these missiles in Ukraine. Iran decided to sell these missiles despite warnings from Western countries. New sanctions have been put on Iran because of this.
Earlier this year, the US allowed Ukraine to use Western weapons against Russian forces. But last month, Ukraine did something surprising. They launched an attack inside Russia’s territory in Kursk. This move was meant to boost their spirits and distract Russian troops on the eastern front.
Reports say that President Biden might allow Ukraine to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles against Russia. The UK has been pushing the US to support Ukraine more with weapons.
Ukraine wants to relax rules on US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). These missiles can hit targets up to 300 kilometers away. Some US Congress members wrote a letter asking President Biden to act quickly on this. They said Russia should not have a safe place to attack Ukraine from.
In the US, there are different opinions about Ukraine. Some Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have suggested that if he wins the next election, he might use aid to make Ukraine agree to deals with Russia to end the war.
