Michaela Coel, the talented writer and actress, has revealed her new TV show First Day On Earth. This is her first series since the award-winning I May Destroy You.
Coel will write, star in, and be one of the producers for this 10-part show on the BBC. Filming starts next year. First Day On Earth will follow Henri, a British author played by Coel, who moves to Ghana to reconnect with her estranged father.
Jesse Armstrong, the creator of Succession, will also be a producer. Coel shared her excitement, saying, "Creating FDOE has been a beautiful experience. I’m excited for viewers to join Henri on this amazing journey!"
Michaela Coel first became well-known with Channel 4’s Chewing Gum, based on her 2012 play. The show won her two Bafta TV Awards. Her next series, I May Destroy You, was even more successful, winning an Emmy and five Baftas.
Coel turned down a $1 million offer from Netflix because the BBC gave her more creative control. Besides TV, she appeared in Marvel's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Amazon’s Mr & Mrs Smith.
First Day On Earth will also be co-produced by HBO and made by Various Artists Limited, along with A24. This new series is set to be another big achievement for Coel.
