The town of Katesh, located 300km north of the capital, Dodoma, experienced torrential downpours over the weekend, causing vehicles to be washed away and buildings to collapse. Despite ongoing search efforts, two additional bodies were found, bringing the death toll to 65.
Television images revealed the destruction, with debris from homes scattered across the streets and infrastructure damaged. A man named James, who tragically lost his wife and daughter in the disaster, recounted the terrifying experience of mud, trees, and stones rolling down from the mountain.
According to Mobhare Matinyi, a government spokesperson, approximately 5,600 individuals have been forced to leave their homes due to landslides.
One of the victims, 24-year-old Rashid Ntandu, had his house destroyed in the calamity and is now seeking refuge at a school in Katesh, which has been converted into a shelter. Ntandu expressed his belief that there could be additional bodies buried beneath the mud.
