Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming US presidential election. He called it a "terrible" and "stupid" show.
In an interview with a Russian TV station called VGTRK, Lukashenko said he was shocked by the empty words and personal attacks between the candidates.
He called both Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump "idiots."
Lukashenko made these comments while attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. When asked if he was watching the US election, he answered negatively. He said that if the election were happening in Belarus or Russia, neither candidate would have a chance to win.
He pointed out, “One is incompetent, and the other is talking nonsense.” He was frustrated with both candidates.
According to Lukashenko, the campaigns have wasted a lot of money without offering any real plans for the future. He said, “This is a terrible, stupid election. From our perspective, I don’t understand anything at all.”
Even though he was critical, Lukashenko said he would rather see Trump win the election. However, he made it clear that this was not because he liked Trump or his ideas.
He worried about what would happen if Harris became president. “I know what will happen if Harris stays. If Trump comes along... well, I assume nothing good will happen, but there is still some hope,” he said.
Lukashenko is doubtful that Trump can help end the fighting in Ukraine. He knows that fixing such big problems is easier said than done. Trump has spoken a lot about the war in Ukraine.
He believes that if he becomes president, he can help bring peace. He has also criticized how the US pays for Ukraine using taxpayers' money. Trump said in September, “I think that we’re stuck in that war unless I’m president. I’ll get it done. I’ll get it negotiated, I’ll get out. We gotta get out.”
In contrast, Kamala Harris has promised to keep President Joe Biden’s plans. She wants to support Ukraine and stay close to NATO allies.
During her speech accepting the Democratic nomination, she said, “As president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.”
Lukashenko's comments show how leaders from other countries see the US election. Russian President Vladimir Putin also shared similar thoughts about the US election. In July, he said he doubted the election results would change US rules about Russia.
Putin told reporters, “We do not think the election outcome will impact US policy toward Russia.” He added that Russia would work with any leader chosen by the American people.
The words from both leaders highlight how foreign countries view American politics. Lukashenko and Putin seem to believe that US politics is not as serious as it should be. They feel the candidates are more focused on fighting each other than on real problems that affect people.
