US President Joe Biden is getting ready to give a very important speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. With just four months left in his term, he plans to talk about his efforts in foreign policy and the big global problems he's been dealing with, like the war in Ukraine and the conflicts in the Middle East.
World Problems Biden Faces
Right now, two big wars are happening. One is in Ukraine, where the country is still trying to defend itself from Russia, which invaded in February 2022.
The other conflict is in the Middle East, where Israel and Hezbollah, a group from Lebanon, are fighting along the border. There's also a lot of violence in Gaza after Hamas, a group from Palestine, attacked Israel. Israel fought back, and the fighting continues.
Because things are so tense in the Middle East, the United States is sending more troops there just to be safe.
Biden's Focus on Foreign Policy
Biden has spent much of his time as president dealing with these global issues. His administration is working to stop Russia from taking over Ukraine and to limit the power of countries like China and Iran.
Both Iran and China support groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, who are involved in the Middle East fighting.
On Monday, a senior White House official said that Biden will use his UN speech to share what he believes are his biggest achievements in foreign policy. He will also ask for more support for Ukraine and call for peace talks in the Middle East.=
Calling for Global Teamwork
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden's speech will focus on how the world needs to come together to solve these big problems. He wants world leaders to protect important ideas, like the ones in the UN Charter, which is all about peace and safety for all nations.
Later this week, Biden is also going to meet with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Washington, D.C. Zelenskiy is expected to share a new peace plan for Ukraine.
It will likely ask for more weapons and help from other countries. Biden has made it clear that the United States will continue to support Ukraine. Jean-Pierre said that Biden is committed to giving Ukraine the tools it needs to defend itself and find lasting peace.
Meeting with Vietnam's President
During his two-day visit to New York, Biden has other meetings planned. On Wednesday, he will meet with To Lam, the president of Vietnam. Biden wants to strengthen ties with Vietnam, which is a key country in Southeast Asia.
Vietnam has connections with both Russia and China, and Biden hopes to improve relations with Vietnam to counter the influence of those two powerful nations.
