A tragic shooting happened at Sanski Most High School Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday morning. The small town, about 200 kilometers northwest of Sarajevo, was shaken by this event.
Around 10:15 AM local time, a former employee started shooting. Local media initially reported that the gunman was a caretaker at the Sanski Most school.
He used a military rifle and killed three staff members: the principal, a secretary, and a teacher. The shooter had a problem with the school’s management and also tried to harm himself.
Adnan Beganovic, the regional police spokesman, told reporters that the shooter had tried to take his own life and is now seriously injured.
Fortunately, students were on summer break, so no children were at the school. Teachers were there to prepare for the next school year.
Emergency teams arrived quickly. One injured person was taken to Banja Luka Hospital and is in serious condition.
Bosnia, still recovering from past conflicts, has many illegal weapons. But shootings like this are rare. A 2010 UNDP study found about 750,000 illegal weapons in Bosnia.
The last major school shooting in the Balkans was in May 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia. There, a teenager killed ten people, including nine classmates. This new shooting in Sanski Most shows that dealing with gun violence remains a serious issue.
