Britain’s deputy head of mission in Russia, Tom Dodd, reportedly assaulted reporters at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport when asked about a recent spy scandal. The incident, which occurred Thursday, has drawn criticism from Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
On Thursday night, a dramatic scene unfolded at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport involving Britain’s deputy head of mission in Russia, Tom Dodd. He reportedly attacked several reporters after they asked him difficult questions about a recent spy scandal. The incident has stirred up tensions between Russia and Britain.
Tom Dodd arrived at the airport with other officials from the UK’s Foreign Office, including Christopher Allan, who is in charge of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Their visit came after a major controversy in mid-September. Six British diplomats had been expelled from Russia due to accusations of spying. However, Britain firmly denied these claims.
When Dodd and his team landed late on Tuesday, a large group of reporters was waiting for them.
As the group tried to make its way out of the airport, the reporters asked Dodd several uncomfortable questions, especially about the spy scandal. Instead of answering, Dodd reacted aggressively.
According to reports, he tried to grab cameras from reporters, tore an ID badge off one journalist’s neck, and shoved a woman out of his way.
Footage from the scene showed Dodd’s actions, and the incident quickly gained attention.
Outside the airport, the British delegation briefly spoke to the press but avoided answering any serious questions. They mostly talked about the weather while ignoring other more pressing topics. Meanwhile, a small group of protesters had gathered outside. One protester’s sign was torn up by someone from Dodd’s group.
According to reports, the main purpose of the British delegation's visit to Moscow was to inspect the embassy’s work following the spy scandal. Russia had accused British diplomats of being involved in “subversive activities” and spying. These allegations led to the expulsion of six diplomats. London has strongly denied these accusations, calling them “completely baseless.”
The incident at the airport has sparked a strong reaction from Russia. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, sharply criticized Dodd’s behavior.
She said that it shows how Britain treats journalists and press freedom, despite their claims of supporting these values.
Zakharova also called on British diplomats to learn about Russia’s laws that protect journalists. She pointed out that Russia has laws in place that defend press rights, and breaking these laws can lead to serious consequences.
It is still unclear whether Dodd will face any punishment for his actions.
As a diplomat, he has immunity, which may protect him from legal repercussions. However, Russia’s laws on protecting journalists include up to six years in prison for obstructing their work.
