He said that while relations with the U.S. have improved since the meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Joe Biden, America has not fulfilled its promises. Wang questioned the credibility and confidence of the U.S. as a major power if it continues to act in this manner.
He warned that if the U.S. remains focused on suppressing China, it will ultimately harm itself. Wang, a veteran diplomat who has earned Xi's trust, returned to the foreign minister's post last summer after his predecessor was abruptly dismissed.
Speculation from analysts about the possibility of the ruling Communist Party naming a new foreign minister during the weeklong meeting of the National People’s Congress was dismissed after an agenda released on the eve of the opening session did not include any personnel changes.
Wang criticized the United States for causing issues in Taiwan and the South China Sea, without specifically mentioning the country. China asserts that Taiwan is part of its territory and should be under its jurisdiction, as well as claiming a large portion of the South China Sea, leading to disputes with countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian neighbors.
He said that countries maintaining official ties with Taiwan are meddling in China's internal affairs. Despite most countries lacking diplomatic relations with Taiwan, China strongly opposes visits by U.S. lawmakers to the island and sales of military equipment for its defense.
Wang emphasized China's commitment to peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but cautioned that those supporting Taiwanese independence will face consequences. While many Taiwanese desire to remain independent from China, they are wary of potential threats to their freedoms and democracy, particularly following China's actions in Hong Kong.
