Republican Greg Lopez won a special election to fill former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s seat. He outpolled Democrat Trisha Calvarese.
Lopez celebrated with supporters at a restaurant in Elizabeth, where he lives. “I’m excited about the opportunity to represent CD4,” he said in a phone interview.
“I’ll represent the conservative values of this district in a strong and impactful manner.”
Lopez, 60, views his time in Congress as a “temporary duty assignment.” He will serve just over six months before ceding the seat to November’s election winner. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Tuesday’s special election occurred because Ken Buck announced in March that he would step down nine months early, instead of retiring at the end of his term in January. Following this, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called for a special election to fill the remainder of Buck’s term, scheduled on the same day as Colorado’s congressional primary.
According to the Colorado secretary of state’s website at 8:25 p.m., Lopez led with 79,216 votes or 58% of the total. Calvarese had 35%, Libertarian Hannah Goodman had 5%, and Frank Atwood of the Approval Voting Party had 2%.
Republicans chose Greg Lopez, a former Parker mayor, as a placeholder candidate. He decided not to run in the primary that was also held Tuesday.
U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert won the GOP primary in the 4th Congressional District. Trisha Calvarese, a newcomer to politics, led among three Democrats. She ran in both the special and primary elections for the 4th Congressional District, covering the Eastern Plains and parts of Douglas County.
Lopez, who twice ran for governor and lost in the Republican primary, skipped a special election debate in June. The Republican Women of Weld said he refused after they wouldn't endorse him before the debate.
Calvarese, a 37-year-old labor advocate and new to politics, lives in Highlands Ranch. She spent part of her youth in Sterling and came back to Colorado late last year.
