Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that initial reports suggested two ballistic missiles struck the training center in Poltava and a nearby hospital on Tuesday morning.
Zelensky announced he had initiated a "thorough and swift investigation into all aspects of the incident."
"Over 180 individuals suffered injuries. Sadly, there are numerous fatalities. Currently, 47 people have been confirmed dead," Zelensky wrote in a social media update.
According to Zelensky, two Russian ballistic missiles struck a hospital and an educational facility, causing significant damage to one of the structures.
In a Tuesday afternoon update, Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska reported the most recent death toll, stating: “This is a heartbreaking tragedy for all of Ukraine. Russia is stripping away our most precious asset – our lives. We will always remember this.”
