Los Angeles evacuees warned to stay away from home for at least another week

CHICAGO-The family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American hostage, has confirmed his death in Gaza. Hersh was just 23 years old. His parents, who originally hail from the Chicago area, shared this heartbreaking news early Sunday.

The announcement came shortly after the Israeli army reported finding bodies in Gaza.

“With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh,” the family said in a statement.

They expressed their deep gratitude for the love and support they have received. The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

The Israeli army has not yet commented on the discovery or provided details about the other bodies found.

Hersh Goldberg-Polin was among the hostages taken by militants at a music festival in southern Israel on October 7. During the attack, he lost part of his arm. Despite this, his courage and determination touched many around the world.

His parents became prominent figures in the global effort to free the hostages. They met with President Joe Biden, Pope Francis, and other world leaders. Their plea for help was heard by many.

On August 21, they spoke at the Democratic National Convention. The hall fell silent as they shared their story. The crowd then erupted in chants of “Bring them home.”

Earlier this year, in April, a video released by Hamas showed Hersh speaking under clear distress. This video led to widespread protests in Israel. Many demanded that the government take stronger action to secure the release of Hersh and other hostages.

The news of Hersh's death is likely to increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Prime Minister has been urged to find a way to bring the remaining hostages home.

Netanyahu has said that military efforts are necessary to secure their release, especially as cease-fire talks have struggled.

Before this tragic announcement, Israel had believed that 108 hostages were still held in Gaza. About one-third of them were feared dead. Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s passing is a deep loss, not just for his family, but for all who hoped and prayed for his safe return.
