Heavy rains in Nepal have caused flash floods and landslides, killing at least 14 people. Disaster teams are searching for nine missing individuals, according to Nepalese police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki.

The victims are from multiple locations across the country. Monsoon rains from June to September cause death and destruction in South Asia every year. However, the number of deadly floods and landslides has risen recently. Experts blame the climate crisis and increased road construction.

Since Thursday, heavy rainfall has hit parts of Nepal, leading disaster authorities to warn of flash floods in several rivers. Last month, 14 people died in storms that caused landslides, lightning, and flooding.

Flooding in neighboring India and Bangladesh has also caused widespread damage. In India, floods have affected Assam, killing six people in the last 24 hours. This brings the death toll since mid-May to 58. In Bangladesh, over two million people have been impacted by floods.

The summer monsoon provides 70-80% of South Asia's annual rainfall, with the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers winding through India and Bangladesh before reaching the sea.
