Deif was one of the planners of the October 7 attacks in southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people. This announcement follows the killing of other key figures. Hamas political leader Ismael Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, and senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
The Israeli army said, "Following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was eliminated" in the July 13 strike. Gaza’s Hamas-run health authorities had reported that the airstrike killed more than 90 people but denied that Deif was among them.
Mohammed Deif led the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. He was imprisoned by Israel in 1989 and later formed the Brigades to capture Israeli soldiers. Israel accused him of planning bus bombings in 1996, which killed many Israelis, and of being involved in the capture and killing of three Israeli soldiers in the mid-1990s. He also helped build tunnels used by Hamas fighters to enter Israel from Gaza.
Israel's confirmation of Deif's death marks a significant blow to Hamas's military leadership. The ongoing conflict continues to impact the region, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
