Tim Walz, 60, is a U.S. Army National Guard veteran and former teacher. He was first elected to a Republican-leaning district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and served for 12 years. In 2018, he became the governor of Minnesota. As governor, Walz has pushed for free school meals, climate change goals, middle-class tax cuts, and more paid leave for workers.
Even with his progressive views, Walz has also supported some conservative ideas, like backing farmers and supporting gun rights. His mix of views aims to reach many different voters.
Kamala Harris, whose parents came from Jamaica and India, believes Walz is a strong choice for her campaign. Minnesota usually votes for Democrats, but its closeness to key states like Wisconsin and Michigan makes Walz a smart pick.
These battleground states are key in the upcoming November 5 election. Walz is seen as good at connecting with white, rural voters who have supported Donald Trump recently. Harris chose Walz over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who was also a strong option.
Harris, 59, became the Democratic leader after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign last month. Since then, she has raised a lot of money and energized her party's base in the race against Trump.
