A legal storm has hit the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). On Saturday, August 24, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sajib Mahmud Alam sent a notice to the BCB. The notice demands that cricketer Sakib Al Hasan be immediately removed from the national team and return to Bangladesh.

The notice includes serious claims. Sakib, a former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, is named as the 28th person accused in a murder case. The case is about the tragic death of a garment worker named Rubel during an anti-discrimination student movement.

The complaint was filed at a Dhaka police station and includes a surprising 500 people. Among them are well-known figures like former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

The case claims that Rubel was killed on the orders of those accused. Sakib Al Hasan’s name is now on this list. This has caused a big stir in the cricket world.

Right now, Sakib is in Rawalpindi with the Bangladesh national team. They are playing the first match of a two-Test series against Pakistan. Sakib joined the team directly from Canada, skipping Bangladesh completely. As of Saturday, the third day of the Test, Sakib has taken one wicket and scored 15 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan Named in Murder Case Amid Bangladesh Protests

On August 23, he was named as one of the people accused in a murder case related to recent protests and violence in Bangladesh, ESPNcricinfo reports.

Shakib, who was a lawmaker in Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government, is now among 147 people facing charges.

The protests were so intense that Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus then took over as chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government.

The case was filed by Rafiqul Islam at Dhaka’s Adabor police station. Along with Shakib, Islam has named Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several former ministers and lawmakers as accused.

The case involves the killing of Islam’s son, Rubel, who was shot during the protests on August 5. Rubel was severely injured and died two days later in the hospital.

Shakib was not in Bangladesh during the protests. He was playing cricket for the Bangla Tigers in the Global T20 Canada league in Brampton from July 26 to August 9. Before that, he was in the USA for Major League Cricket until mid-July. The complaint says some accused people fired at protesters on August 5, but Shakib’s involvement is unclear.
