British supermodel Naomi Campbell has received a five-year ban from being a charity trustee. This decision comes from the UK's Charity Commission after they found serious issues with how money was handled at her charity, Fashion for Relief.
The Charity Commission is the organization that oversees charities in England and Wales. They began investigating Fashion for Relief in 2021. The charity, which Campbell founded in 2005, aimed to help people in need through fashion events and donations.
In early 2024, the charity was dissolved and removed from the register of charities. It was set up to help relieve poverty and improve health and education by giving money to other organizations and supporting global disasters.
Mismanagement of Funds Exposed
Fashion for Relief hosted fundraising events in places like Cannes and London. These events were meant to raise money to help others. However, the investigation revealed that between April 2016 and July 2022, only 8.5 percent of the charity's total spending went to charitable grants.
The Charity Commission found that there was no evidence that the trustees took proper action to ensure the fundraising was done in the best way for the charity. They also noted that the spending did not seem reasonable when compared to the income raised. Some expenses were labeled as misconduct or mismanagement by the trustees.
One example included a flight from London to Nice, which was paid for by the charity. This flight was for transferring art and jewelry to a fundraising event in Cannes in 2018. The Charity Commission also investigated the spending on Campbell’s stay at a five-star hotel.
During the inquiry, the commission looked closely at how the charity spent its money. They found that Campbell’s stay at the hotel cost a significant amount. Along with the hotel stay, there were nearly 7,940 euros (about $13,000) spent on other expenses. These included spa treatments, room service, cigarettes, and hotel products.
The trustees said that hotel costs were usually covered by a donor. However, they failed to provide any proof to support this claim. This lack of evidence raised concerns about how the charity’s money was being used.
As a result of these findings, Campbell is now banned from being a trustee for five years. Two other trustees, Bianka Hellmich and Veronica Chou, also received bans. Hellmich has been disqualified for nine years, while Chou has been banned for four years.
The bans mean that Campbell, Hellmich, and Chou cannot serve as trustees or hold senior management roles in any charity in England and Wales during their disqualification periods.
The Charity Commission's investigation also recovered £344,000 (around $670,000) of the charity's funds. They protected an additional £98,000 of charitable money.
The Commission also said that it will continue to monitor charities to ensure they comply with regulations. It encourages all charities to have clear guidelines on how funds should be managed and spent.
