Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory in a social media post but official final election results are not expected for several hours.

Early results indicate that Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party may not achieve a majority on its own, forcing it to rely on alliance partners to form a government.

The counting of all 642 million votes from the world's largest election, which ended on June 1, is taking place amid a deadly heatwave that has claimed the lives of many people.

The latest results show Modi's alliance got a narrow majority, a shift from the clear victories in the previous two elections.

According to the ongoing vote count, Modi's BJP will need alliance partners to secure a majority in the lower house of parliament. The National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi, is currently leading in about 290 seats, falling short of the target of over 400 seats.

The BJP itself is leading in 239 seats, down from 303 in the last election.

Rahul Gandhi of Congress said that the election results show India's rejection of Modi and Shah's leadership. The INDIA bloc will decide on approaching former allies for government formation.

Gandhi emphasized that the election was a battle to protect the Constitution.

This time, the BJP will need the support of its alliances  to reach the 272 majority mark in the 543-seat lower house of parliament, as per the ongoing vote count.
