NATO ministers discuss Russia-Ukraine war at Brussels summit

     Nov 28, 2023 / GMT+6

Foreign ministers from NATO countries have assembled in Brussels to discuss security matters, with particular focus on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas. The two-day summit, which started on Tuesday, is mainly centered on finding ways to support Ukraine, which is currently facing funding obstacles from both the United States and Europe.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed confidence that the US would continue to offer support due to its national security interests, and called on allies to fulfill their commitments of assistance.

However, the proposed $61 billion aid package from the US Congress and the $50 billion package from the European Union are currently facing challenges to their approval. Opposition from Hungary is hampering the passage of the EU package.

On Wednesday, Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's top diplomat, will attend the summit in an attempt to overcome fatigue and advocate for ongoing support from NATO. Kuleba will collaborate with NATO ministers to develop a plan for reforms aimed at assisting Ukraine in eventually becoming a member of the security alliance.

Russia has consistently warned against Ukraine joining NATO, claiming that NATO expansionism is the root cause of their grievances against the neighboring country. Since February 2022, it is estimated that over 500,000 troops from Russia and Ukraine have been killed or injured as a result of the conflict that arose when Moscow sent troops across the border. Additionally, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has reported that at least 10,000 civilians have lost their lives in the conflict.
