In Alexei Navalny's memoir, he shares his fear of dying in prison. The brave Russian leader fought against corruption until his sad death.

Alexei Navalny was a well-known leader in Russia who strongly opposed President Vladimir Putin. He was very brave and worked hard to fight against bad things in the government. Recently, parts of his memoir were shared in a magazine called The New Yorker. The full book will be published as Patriot on October 22.

Navalny was in prison because he spoke out against the government. He received a long 19-year sentence for charges he thought were unfair. He believed the government wanted to punish him for leading a group they called “extremist.”

In February, Navalny sadly died in a remote prison in the Arctic. He returned to Russia in 2021 after spending time in Germany. He had gone to Germany to recover from being poisoned. Navalny blamed the Kremlin for the poisoning, which made him very sick. Russian officials have denied any involvement in the poisoning or his death.

The book Patriot was announced by a publisher named Alfred A. Knopf in April. They called it Navalny's "final letter to the world." He began writing this book while he was healing from the poisoning and continued while he was in prison.

In his memoir, Navalny talked about how he coped with being in prison. He explained that he would imagine the worst things that could happen to him. Then, he would accept those fears. For him, this meant thinking he might die in prison.

On March 22, 2022, he wrote, "I will spend the rest of my life in prison and die here." He felt sad because he would not have anyone to say goodbye to. He wrote, "All anniversaries will be celebrated without me. I'll never see my grandchildren."

Even though he thought this way, Navalny's memoir showed he was not giving up. He was still fighting against corruption in Russia. He wrote, "My approach to the situation is certainly not one of contemplative passivity." He wanted to do everything he could to help end unfair rule in his country.

Navalny also shared why he returned to Russia. He wanted to show that he would not give up on his country. In a part of the book written on January 17, 2024, he answered the question, "Why did you come back?" He said, "I don't want to give up my country or betray it."

He believed that if your beliefs are important, you must be ready to stand up for them, even if it means making sacrifices. His bravery and love for his country are clear in his words.
