Nepal is facing a big problem. Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in many places. So far, 38 people have died, and 29 people are missing. The situation is scary, especially in the capital city, Kathmandu, where streets are filled with water.
The rain started pouring heavily in the last 24 hours. Many areas are now hard to reach. The government is taking this situation very seriously.
More than 3,000 security personnel are helping with rescue efforts. They are using helicopters and motorboats to reach people who need help.
Basanta Adhikari, a spokesperson for Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said, “Police are working with other groups and locals to rescue and find the missing people.”
This shows how many people are coming together to help each other during this tough time.
A truck driver shared his scary experience. He said, “When I went outside in the middle of the night, the water had already reached up to my shoulders.” This shows how fast the water rose and how dangerous it is.
Because of the floods, all domestic flights out of Kathmandu were canceled. This affects more than 150 flights. However, international flights are still operating, according to Rinji Sherpa, a spokesperson for Kathmandu airport.
The heavy rains have also caused landslides. These landslides have blocked roads in 28 different locations. Police are working hard to clear the roads and make them safe for travel. Police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki mentioned their efforts to reopen these important routes.
Weather experts say that the heavy rains might continue until Sunday morning. Binu Maharjan, a weather forecasting official in Kathmandu, said that a low-pressure system in neighboring India is causing these long rains. “Heavy rains are likely to continue until Sunday morning, and the weather is likely to clear after that,” she said.
In addition to the immediate dangers, the Koshi River is also rising dangerously. This river has caused floods in India many times before. An official confirmed that the river is above the danger level. Ram Chandra Tiwari, a local leader, noted that the river level is still going up.
Many experts believe that climate change is making these big storms and floods happen more often in Nepal. This year, over 170 people have died from rain-related disasters. Each year, the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, brings heavy rain and destruction to Nepal and other parts of South Asia.
