She conveyed this message during an interview with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday, following the blocking of a crucial aid bill by Republican senators in the US. The bill, which would have granted over $60 billion of support to Ukraine, was denied a vote. Zelenska expressed her concerns shortly after a missile attack by Russia, saying that if the international community grows weary, Ukraine will be left to perish.
While the White House has issued warnings about the dwindling funds allocated to Ukraine, Republicans have delayed the approval of further aid in an attempt to secure concessions from President Joe Biden and Congressional Democrats regarding funding for US border measures. President Biden remarked that the failure to reach an agreement on Ukrainian aid would be a "gift" for President Vladimir Putin, cautioning that history will scrutinize those who turned their backs on the pursuit of freedom.
Almost two years after Russia illegally invaded Ukraine, the first lady shared her deep concern about the delays in providing funding. In an interview exclusively with the BBC, Olena Zelenska expressed her belief that the slowdown in aid posed a significant threat to her country. She said, We are in desperate need of help.
To put it simply, we cannot afford to become weary of our situation, because if we do, we will perish. And if the rest of the world grows tired, they will simply allow us to die. Zelenska went on to say, It deeply saddens us to witness any signs suggesting that the fervent desire to assist us may diminish.
This is a matter of life and death for us, and it is painful to observe it. The United Kingdom has been pressuring politicians in Washington DC to reach an agreement for Ukraine. During a recent visit to Washington, UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron stressed the United States' essential role as the cornerstone of the Western coalition supporting Ukraine's battle against Russia.
He strongly advised the US against denying Mr Putin a "Christmas gift" by blocking the necessary financial assistance to continue the war against Russian forces.
It is clear that the international community's position towards Ukraine has changed.
While there is no guarantee of unwavering support in Washington DC, the core issues of the conflict remain unchanged.
Ukraine, a country on the eastern edge of Europe, is still battling to defend itself against Russian forces following an unlawful invasion by the Kremlin.
In February 2022, Ukraine surprised everyone by successfully repelling the invasion with its armed forces.
In return, many Western countries surprised Ukraine with their enthusiastic support.
However, Ukraine cannot sustain its current efforts without the financial resources and backing from other nations.
The warnings from the first lady serve to emphasize this fact.
