Paul Hollywood has sharply criticized those who attacked his wife, Melissa, after she was granted permission to convert their Kent pub into a house.
Melissa Hollywood, owner of the historic Chequers Inn in Smarden, Kent, announced plans to shut the pub at the end of August due to declining business. The Grade II-listed building, which has served the village for over 600 years, faced opposition from locals who feared that losing the pub would hurt the local economy.

Ashford Borough Council approved turning the pub into a private home. They made this decision after a request in January. Despite efforts to sell the pub, Melissa received offers that were far below expectations.
Paul Hollywood, famous for "The Great British Bake Off," expressed his frustration in an interview with BBC South East. He described the local backlash against his wife’s family as "unforgivable." Hollywood noted that the pub has been struggling financially despite investing significant amounts in renovations and a new car park.
He added, “The pub is closing because it can’t generate enough income. We’ve invested tens of thousands to improve it, but it’s not a charity. If locals want to buy it, that’s up to them.” Hollywood said he will personally support his wife’s family but emphasized that he is not running a charity.
The Chequers Inn, a cherished village landmark, will close by the end of the month.
