On Saturday, September 14, tensions between Russia and the West took a dramatic turn. Russian officials issued a strong warning about what might happen if Ukraine gets new weapons from Western countries.
Western leaders are currently debating whether to let Ukraine use advanced weapons that could strike deep into Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear on Friday night that his plans for winning the war depend on this decision.
He is hoping that Washington will agree to provide the long-range weapons Ukraine has been asking for from NATO allies.
Andriy Yermak, a key advisor to President Zelenskyy, spoke out on Telegram on Saturday. He said that strong decisions are necessary and that stopping the attacks requires targeting the military bases where they start. Yermak believes these strikes are crucial for limiting Russia's ability to attack Ukraine.
Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has been arguing that these long-range strikes are vital. They think that attacking deeper into Russian territory would help prevent more attacks on Ukraine. However, Western allies have been hesitant.
They worry that allowing such strikes might make the conflict even worse and are unsure if it will be effective.
While no official decision has been announced yet, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov claimed that a decision about Ukraine's request has already been made. He suggested that Moscow has been informed of this decision and warned that Russia is prepared to respond.
Ryabkov said, “The decision has been made, the carte blanche and all indulgences have been given to Kyiv, so we are ready for everything.” He added that Russia’s reaction might be severe and not pleasant.
So far, Western leaders have not made an official decision about whether to approve Ukraine's request for new weapons. The situation remains tense as everyone waits to see what action will be taken.
