Russia’s Putin Offers Help to North Korea After Floods

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered help to North Korea after severe floods. This move shows the growing bond between Russia and North Korea.
On Saturday, Putin sent a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, offering deep sympathy and support. He promised immediate aid to help North Korea recover from the floods, according to North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Russia’s Tass news agency also reported that Putin told Kim, “You can always count on our help and support.”
The relationship between North Korea and Russia has been getting stronger. Many think North Korea gave weapons to Russia for the Ukraine conflict, in exchange for military and economic help.
In June, Kim and Putin signed a big defense agreement in Pyongyang, pledging mutual military aid if either country is attacked. Kim thanked Putin for the aid offer, recognizing the support of a true friend in this tough time. However, Kim noted that North Korea has its own recovery plans and may ask for Russian help later if needed.
The floods on July 27 hit North Korea’s northwestern region, damaging 4,100 homes, 7,410 acres of farmland, and many public buildings, roads, and railways. The exact number of casualties is not known. Kim described the situation as a “casualty that cannot be allowed” but did not give more details.
South Korea also offered help, but North Korea is expected to refuse it due to rising tensions. Kim recently criticized South Korean media, calling them “scum” and accusing them of exaggerating the flood death toll.
