Rushdie spoke at a virtual event called 'South Asian Men for Harris.' He joined other important figures from the Indian-American community, including lawmakers, writers, and business people, to show support for Harris. Rushdie said, "I'm from Bombay, and it's great to see an Indian woman running for the White House. My wife is African-American, so we love that a Black and Indian woman is running for the White House."
Harris, 59, is expected to become the Democratic Party's candidate for president. She will replace Joe Biden, who left the race in July. If she wins, Harris would be the first woman of Black and Indian background to hold the office.
Rushdie emphasized that her background alone isn't enough for support. He highlighted the importance of Harris's candidacy in changing American politics. He said, "The conversation has entirely changed with Kamala Harris's candidacy. It’s changed with optimism and positive thinking."
Rushdie stressed the need for the community’s support to stop Trump. He described Trump as "a hollow man without a single noble quality," trying to lead the country towards dictatorship. Rushdie is confident in Harris, stating, "She is the person who can stop it. I'm 1,000 percent in for her."
Reflecting on American politics, Rushdie noted that Trump no longer looks like a star. "Right now, he looks like the old, fat guy. Kamala looks like the superstar. Her charisma could be critical in the weeks ahead."
Addressing doubts about Harris's chances based on her background, Rushdie acknowledged changing societal attitudes. He said, "Times have changed. There’s no reason why Kamala Harris should not win easily."
Recent polls show Harris is neck and neck with Trump, showing significant progress since the last Biden poll. "We can do this. We just have to believe it," Rushdie said.
